Actually, the problem isn't anywhere virtually as serious as some might think. Of the 32 punctuation characters available on your keyboard, all but 9 can exist used in file names.
The nine that tin can't are:
- /
- :
- *
- ?
- "
- <
- >
- |

Frankly, I wish Microsoft was stricter virtually this sort of thing, and didn't allow us to utilise periods (.) in file names.
